Metrocon Demo, Seminars, and Taikai

Postby animo on Mon Jun 16, 2008 3:09 pm

4:00 pm Friday and Saturday - Guest Track
- Toyama Ryu Batto Do Seminar
Experience a hands-on class in authentic Japanese Swordsmanship taught by Taikai Champion and gold medalist Mike Femal. The dojo comes to Metrocon – it’s your chance to experience it. No martial art or sword experience is required. United States and Japan gold medal winner and Yondan (4th degree black belt) Mike Femal Sensei and his students will guide you through the proper stance, grip, the 8 basic cuts, and the first three kata of Toyama Ryu Batto Do. This class will be taught with bokken (wooden training swords). Format and content of class is the same as the Seizankai Dojo in Machida, Japan. All participants will need to sign a general release form. Participants under 18 will require parental signature (ID required).

1:00 pm Saturday - Special Events Room
- Path of the Samurai Demo
Join the Konjaku Kioi Toyama Ryu School of Japanese swordsmanship as they demonstrate their skills with Katana. Real swords, real targets, and real action make this a must see event. Experience dramatic tameshigiri pitting sword and wielder against tough unyielding targets and focused kata highlighting each individual’s pursuit of perfection. Actual cutting is done with tough tatami omote and bamboo. This is the real deal and you don’t want to miss it.

2:00 pm Sunday - Special Events Room
- Toyama Ryu Taikai
Experience a real Japanese sword tournament held by the Konjaku Kioi Toyama Ryu dojo. Competitors will face each other in kata (forms) and tameshigiri (cutting) events. This is a real competition and not choreographed event. Come watch and cheer for all the competitors hoping to win the title of Taikai champion.

Hello Crystal,

I'm glad you enjoyed the events. We do the Metrocon events because of the great reception we get from people like you. Everyone in the dojo trains hard, and we don't often get a chance to share swordsmanship with the public.
